A boy has been seriously injured after he was pinned between a car and a tree for about 40 minutes in Sydney's east.

A car allegedly mounted a footpath and hit the boy at the intersection of Gardeners Road and Bunnerong Road in Daceyville at 3.40pm this afternoon, police have said.

Emergency services freed the boy and took him to Sydney Children's Hospital in a serious condition.

The driver, a 17-year-old man, was not injured.

He has been taken to Prince of Wales Hospital for mandatory testing.

The crash has caused major traffic delays and motorists have been told to avoid the area.

Police are examining the scene and appealing for dashcam footage.
