Heroic boy honoured for calm Triple Zero call to rescue best mate

You want a cool head in a crisis.

Today, a ten-year-old boy from New South Wales has been honoured for showing bravery and calmness well beyond his tender years amid a major medical emergency.

Ash Wade and his best mate Josh Ferry had been mountain climbing near Raymond Terrace when a boulder fell on Josh.

Rather than panic, it was Ash who jumped straight on the phone to call Triple Zero.

“We're climbing up the mountain and a huge rock has fallen on my friend's leg and there's blood and everything... he’s got a huge cut on his leg with a chunk missing,” Ash said, in the calmest of voices.

In the audio from the phone call, released today, Ash can be heard continually reassuring his panicked friend, all the while giving precise instructions to rescuers on where the duo could be found.

A rescue helicopter was sent to help, with Josh eventually being rushed to hospital with a compound fracture to his leg and pins inserted in surgery.

Ash was today presented with a Star Award by paramedics, acknowledging the mature and calm response to his mate’s injury.
