Boxing champ takes on would-be pharmacy robber who threatened his girlfriend

A would-be robber has landed himself in a fracas with a champion boxer, who was trying to protect his “love” during an attempted robbery at a pharmacy in the US state of Florida.

David West, 25, stopped by the pharmacy at a Walgreens in Bradenton on Valentine’s Day to visit his girlfriend and ask her if she wanted something for lunch.

“She said, ‘Subway’, and literally like right as she said, ‘Subway’, the gentleman walked around the counter and jumped onto the counter, demanding pain medicine,” Mr West told ABC13.

CCTV of the incident then shows Mr West, who holds two state boxing titles, calmly taking on the man in an effort to subdue him.

The suspect, 26-year-old Anthony Nemeth, was trying to steal the pain medication Oxycodone and claimed he was carrying a gun.

“He started fiddling with his hands and went to reach into his pants and that’s when I reacted,” Mr West said.

After a struggle and several punches thrown, the suspect was eventually knocked out.

“I really wasn’t trying to hurt anybody, I was just trying to do what was right,” Mr West said.

“I was protecting the one I love.”

Mr West then detained the suspect and gave him some important life advice as they waited for police to arrive.

“I told him this, I hope he uses this as a turning point in his life,” Mr West said.

Mr West said he hoped Mr Nemeth would seek the help he needs.
