Witnesses who rushed to help the man said he was bleeding heavily from his head and was lying unconscious on the ground.

Police have told 9NEWS the man had just been dropped off by his wife and she was waiting in a car further down the road unaware as to what had just happened behind her.

It is understood the bus driver stopped his vehicle as soon as it happened and let all his passengers off.

Witnesses said he was “inconsolable”.

“He was so shocked. He cried and he was shaking,” a witness said.

Police are talking to the bus driver.

The elderly man was taken to St George Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
