Bookmakers tighten the odds as Victorian election race heats up

The coalition's chances of winning the Victorian election have improved slightly in the eyes of bookmakers, who have cut the current government's odds.

The coalition was a $5.20 underdog earlier this week but has firmed to $4.50 with Sportsbet.

The Labor opposition is still the strong favourite at $1.18, up from $1.17.

The party leaders fronted a public debate in the marginal seat of Frankston last night to answer questions from local voters.

Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews stuck to a positive message in his closing statements, including Labor's plans for improving services and removing level crossings.

Premier Denis Napthine asked voters who they trusted to deliver infrastructure and a strong economy, while also attacking the legacy of the previous Labor government.

The 100 voters narrowly gave the debate to Mr Andrews 39-38, but 23 were still undecided.
