The great-niece of Neville Bonner, the first indigenous member of the Australian parliament, has taken her place in the Senate.

Joanna Lindgren was sworn in as a senator on Monday, replacing Queensland Liberal Brett Mason, who retired in March.

Mr Bonner also filled a casual vacancy in the Senate in 1971 before being elected in 1972 and holding office until 1983.
