A shopping centre in Sydney's eastern suburbs has been reopened after it was briefly evacuated due to a police operation.

Police said the Eastgate Bondi Junction shopping centre on Spring Street was evacuated about 11am as a precaution.

Just before 11.30am, police said the shopping centre was being reopened, and that there were no suspicious circumstances.

It is understood a report was made to police when an item was found inside.

Police urged pedestrians and drivers to avoid the area, while localised diversions have been put in place. Those have now cleared.

A statement from the shopping centre said that all customers were welcome back.

"We're committed to ensuring the well-being of our community, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this short closure," it said.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding!"
