A bomb scare shut down a busy Melbourne road causing tram displays, with a robot deployed to investigate a suspicious package.

Glenferrie Road in Malvern was closed in both directions between High Street and Wattletree Road, with delays on four different tram routes.

A bomb robot was used to investigate a package left at the side of the road.

A police spokeperson said the area was deemed safe just after 8am.

"Police have cleared the scene... The matter was resolved shortly after 8am without incident or threat to public safety," the spokesperson said.

Glenferrie Road has since reopened.

Yarra Trams says route 5, 6, 72 and 58 trams are experiencing delays.
