A body has been found in NSW's Murrumbidgee River three days after a 19-year-old man went missing trying to swim across it.

Police say the body, found at 9.15am (AEDT) on Monday, has yet to be formally identified but is believed to be that of the missing man.

The teenager was swimming with two others to an embankment on the other side of the river at Wagga Wagga in central NSW on Friday evening when he got into trouble.

A 28-year-old man turned back to help but lost sight of him, police say.

A search involving police, divers, State Emergency Service volunteers and ambulance rescue was launched.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
