BMW impounded after clocking twice the speed limit in an 80km/h zone in Melbourne's west

A BMW has been impounded after police allegedly clocked it travelling at twice the speed limit in an 80km/h zone in Melbourne's west last night.

The 33-year-old Cairnlea driver will be charged on summons with speeding, Victoria Police said in a statement.

Police allegedly detected the car speeding on Ballarat Road at Ardeer just before 9.30pm (AEDT).

The 2007 model car, which belonged to the driver's passenger, has been impounded for 30 days at a cost of $935.

Victoria Police has ensured a strong presence on roads as part of Operation Roadwise.

Since the operation launched on December 13, police have detected more than 20,000 traffic offences including more than 1100 drunk and drugged drivers.
