A 25-year-old driver is fighting for life after speeding the wrong way down a Melbourne freeway.

Dashcam vision shows the white BMW hurtling down the Tullamarine Freeway shortly after midnight.

Witness Eren Batu can be heard saying ‘woah’ as he narrowly dodges the vehicle, before expressing relief: “A car almost killed me. It’s on the wrong side of the freeway”.

About 15 minutes later, the BMW crashed head-on into a black SUV close to the Flemington Road exit.

The BMW driver sustained critical injuries, while the 42-year-old SUV driver escaped with non-life threatening injuries to his arm and leg.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Neville Taylor said the BMW driver’s actions were “inexplicable”.

“We see people do outrageous things on our roadway,” Act Asst Comm Taylor said.

“It’s fortunate there weren’t other vehicles involved.”

Mr Batu told 9NEWS he was grateful to have escaped the collision.

“It could have been me. If I was in the right-hand lane, it could have been me.”

Investigations are ongoing.
