BMW Australia recalls more than 270 vehicles over fears they could catch fire

BMW Australia is recalling more than 270 vehicles over fears a manufacturing defect could trigger a fire.

The recall is for two models - the 520i and X3 - from 2024 and 2025.

"Due to a manufacturing defect, an electrical connection within the vehicle's starter generator may not have been assembled to specifications," the recall notice said.

"This could cause a sudden loss of power whilst driving.

"In addition, a faulty connection may also generate excessive heat, which could lead to a vehicle fire.

"A sudden loss of motive power and/or a vehicle fire could increase the risk of an accident causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, bystanders and/or damage to property."

Owners of affected vehicles should immediately contact their authorised BMW dealer for repair work to be carried out free of charge.

A list of vehicle identification numbers of the affected cars is available on the Department of Transport website.
