Blind uni student 'dragged' out of debate

A blind Oxford University student has become the centre of a controversy after he was allegedly dragged from a lecture hall.

Ebenezer Azamati, a post-graduate student from Ghana, was filmed in a dispute with security personnel in a debate hall after he was apparently refused entry.

The video shows the staff laying hands on Mr Azamati, after which he was allegedly dragged out of the chamber.

The Oxford University Africa Society (AfriSoc) said Mr Azamatai was "forcibly and violently prevented" from re-entering the hall to resume his seat, after he had exited and re-entered the chamber before the debate began.

"He should have actually been helped to resume his seat inside the Chamber," the society said in a statement.

"Should the debate have even begun already, the Union ought to have a well thought out procedure for a situation where a physically impaired individual may need to exit and resume their place within your chamber."

AfriSoc called for an "unreserved public apology" to Mr Azamati, and for the security staff to be punished.

More than 100 people took part in a protests against the treatment of Mr Azamati.
