Fierce blaze destroys Toowoomba man's luxury home

A Toowoomba man narrowly escaped death after his luxury home was engulfed by flames overnight.

Darryl Higgs awoke to find fire devouring his three-storey Middle Ridge home at around 9pm yesterday.

“I thought I heard something hit the roof and I think that woke me,” Mr Higgs told 9NEWS.

Despite not hearing his smoke alarms go off, he was able to make his way through the darkness and out a sliding door.

It was five hours before firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control.

Mr Higgs, who shared the house with his late wife, is in shock.

“Lot of memories I’ve lost,” he said.

“I’ll rebuild, but whether I build here or somewhere else, I dunno.”

While Mr Higgs managed to escape uninjured, his home will likely need to be demolished due to the extensive damage.

Investigators have been unable to identify the cause of the fire, however it is not being treated as suspicious.
