Bizarre ‘hole punch cloud’ seen over Victoria’s east

A bizarre cloud formation has captivated skygazers in the town of Yarragon in Victoria’s east.

It’s believed the cloud is a formation known as a fallstreak hole or hole punch cloud.

The Cloud Appreciation Society website states that the holes are formed when the water temperature in the clouds is below freezing but the water does not immediately freeze due to a lack of ice nucleation particles.

When the ice crystals do form it causes the water droplets around the crystals to evaporate, leaving a large hole in the cloud.
