Bishop to watch parliament with interest

Former House of Representatives Speaker Bronwyn Bishop will watch the opening of the new parliament with interest but she won't be there to see it unfold.

Mrs Bishop, who held the Speaker's job in the previous parliament until she fell out of favour with then prime minister Tony Abbott over a travel expenses row, is most interested in the dynamics of the lower house chamber where the government has a slender majority of one seat.

"It has got to be strong and hold the line on the policy that it took to the election as its centrepiece and that is its reform to the budget. It must hold firm to that," she told Sky News on Friday.
