Bishop pushes post-Brexit UK trade talks

Julie Bishop is encouraging a free trade agreement between Australia and the UK as a stepping stone for Britain to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

The foreign minister joined her British counterpart Boris Johnson for a run around London's St James Park and breakfast at his home before an hour-long meeting to talk trade, visas and terrorism.

A spokeswoman for Ms Bishop said talks included how Britain and Australia could negotiate a post-Brexit free trade agreement.

"Minister Bishop encouraged the UK to use such an FTA as a vehicle to later sign up to the (Trans-Pacific Partnership) 11," the spokeswoman said.

On a day when a poll found support for the monarchy at its lowest level, the pair discussed the future of the Commonwealth as well as a possible reciprocal extended visa for Australians in the UK - similar to the E3 visa with the US.

That allows Australians and their spouses to live in the US while working in a specialty occupation.

The proposed Australia Pacific Security College, rebuilding Iraq and Mr Johnson's recent visit to Myanmar were also raised.
