Bishop holds hopes for prosecutions over MH17 disaster

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says the federal government has not seen a report on who is responsible for the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 but it is with Australian air safety investigators.

Ms Bishop says the passage of a year since MH17 was brought down over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board, had not meant the chances of prosecuting those responsible had dwindled.

"We expect the final report into who was responsible for the downing of MH17 to be released in October," Ms Bishop told the ABC's 7.30 Report.

"It hasn't been made available to me or to the government, except to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau as one of the accredited investigators under the Dutch safety board."

Ms Bishop said Australia had sought the United Nations Security Council's support in establishing an international criminal tribunal to prosecute those responsible.

A memorial service for the 38 Australian citizens and residents who died on board MH17 will be held at Parliament House on Friday to mark the first anniversary of the disaster.
