Bindi Irwin sparkles in an energetic jive taking her from the bush to the ballroom

Television presenter and teenage conservationist Bindi Irwin has made her debut on the latest US season of Dancing with the Stars, sending the audience into a frenzy by tearing off a khaki suit to reveal a sparkling green dress underneath.

The 17-year-old was performing a jive with dance partner Derek Hough to Elton John's 1973 hit Crocodile Rock, when she made the surprising reveal.

#TeamCrikey sent social media into meltdown in the US by dedicating her debut performance to her late father, Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin.

The choice of a high-energy dance for a teenager known for having bundles of energy herself appeared to be the perfect match.

Irwin wasn't just a hit with crowds - the judging panel declared her one of the strongest performances on the night.

"It is about all of it as a combination as a whole and you brought it. That was the best performance of the night," judge Julianne Hough said.

"You really are the Wonder from Down Under. Clean, precise, it had a finish that was so wonderful to see in week one. Plus what you have is adorable charm that translates. People love you," judge Bruno Tonioli said.

"You are a superstar. When I was watching you I thought that 30 years ago I would have wanted to be your best friend. Your energy is so contagious," judge Carrie Ann Inaba said.

All three judges gave Irwin and Hough an impressive first-night score of eight out of 10.

The pocket rocket's high score of 24 meant she tied for first place on the leaderboard with former Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter.
