The losing end...Bill Shorten. (AAP)

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten's popularity has slumped to an all-time low as Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's star continues to rise.

The latest Newspoll shows the government comfortably ahead of Labor on the two-party preferred basis, leading 52 to 48, recording a primary vote of 45 per cent against Labor's 35 per cent.

Bill Shorten continues to be the stick in the mud, recording the worst result for a Labor leader in 12 years for preferred PM with just 15 per cent.

Mr Turnbull, meanwhile, is basking in what may yet prove to be honeymoon sun, with a crushing 63 per cent giving him preference as PM.

The figures are the strongest the Coalition has notched up in close to two years.
