Big swell closes south-east Queensland beaches

All beaches on the Gold Coast and some Sunshine Coast beaches have been closed due to hazardous surf conditions generated by Tropical Cyclone Gita.

Surf Lifesaving Queensland announced early today that all Gold Coast beaches including Kirra, Coolangatta and Rainbow Bay had been closed due to the waves.

Less than four hours after the closure, an 18-year-old woman bodyboarding at Greenmount Beach had to be rescued by lifesavers.

The conditions have also forced the closure of beaches along the Sunshine Coast with lifesavers using a jetski to rescue two surfers caught in dangerous conditions.

The conditions are expected to remain in place until early next week with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting "large and powerful surf conditions" until early Tuesday morning.

"Hazardous easterly swells generated by tropical cyclone Gita over the southeastern Coral Sea are likely to persist about southern Queensland beaches today and Monday," the bureau's southeast coast forecast said.
