BHP to close NSW's largest coal mine by 2030
BHP will shut down a coal mine in the NSW Hunter Valley after failing to attract a buyer for it.
The mining giant announced it did not receive a viable offer for New South Wales Energy Coal (NSWEC), which controls the Mount Arthur open-cut coal mine south of Muswellbrook.
The mine employs about 2000 people and is the largest in the state.

BHP currently has mining consent to operate at Mount Arthur until 2026, but is seeking an extension to keep mining there until 2030.
BHP said operating until 2030 was the "optimal financial outcome when compared to alternate options".
After the 2030 financial year, BHP will close the mine.

Rehabilitating the site is expected to take another 10 to 15 years.
The mine was solely mining coal for the international market after ceasing domestic sales in 2020.
