Bert Newton discharged from hospital after pneumonia scare

Television icon Bert Newton has been released from a Melbourne hospital after suffering from pneumonia complications.

Newton, 78, was admitted to the emergency department at the Epworth Hospital last Wednesday after his symptoms worsened.

Newton, who was discharged today, said he was "fighting fit" and proved he had lost none of his sense of humour.

"The dandruff has gone and the ingrown toenail is looking much better," Newton said.

"Everything's fine. Actually I do feel so much better than when I came in a week ago.

"Pneumonia's not a nice thing, it's quite an enemy.

"This is the third time that I've had it.

"You've got to do the right thing and we did the right thing by coming back to the hospital."

Newton said he had received a blood transfusion during his stay and thanked doctors for their treatment.

Newton’s wife Patti, who shared a photo of the beloved star with his grandson on Saturday, thanked the public for their "fabulous support".

"We thank all of those people," Mrs Newton said as she picked up her husband.

"The grandchildren and my daughter and I are very thrilled that he's back with us."
