'Be afraid Canberra', Leyonhjelm warns

Busybodies everywhere have been put on notice.

David Leyonhjelm has vowed to shake things up when he enters the upper house, and the senator-elect is not afraid to speak his mind.

The Liberal Democratic Party has high hopes for its star senator.

In a press release titled "Be afraid Canberra", it's flagged those it suspects will fall foul of its pure libertarian agenda.

"Believers in big government, rent seekers, those who want to impose their world view on others, agrarian socialists, and busybodies everywhere may come to remember Tuesday July 1 2014," it warned.

Senator Leyonhjelm joins his 11 newly elected upper house colleagues this week for "senator kindy", during which they will be walked through the basics of becoming a member of parliament.

It's not clear how his outspoken views and hardline libertarian agenda will wash with his more mainstream colleagues.

The senator wants to build popular support for the libertarian movement, and doesn't want his party pigeonholed as right wing because they advocate for smaller government.

"This ignores the fact we support marriage equality, the medical use of marijuana and assisted suicide," he said in a statement.

The former Shooters Party chairman has already agreed to support the Abbott government's bid to abolish the carbon tax, but beyond that it may be a case of wait and see.

Senator Leyonhjelm will make his maiden speech to parliament on July 9.
