Eight charged after pro-Palestine protest at Melbourne factory

Eight people aged from their 20s to their 60s have been arrested after a pro-Palestine protest on the roof of an aerospace factory in Melbourne's east.

Police believe the group gained access to the Rosebank Engineering factory on Mountain Highway in Bayswater about 6am yesterday.

Whistleblowers, Activists, & Communities Alliance Spokesperson Gaye Demanuele told 9News about eight activists were on the roof protesting against the exportation of weapon components to Israel.

Protestors let off flares and spray-painted the front of the factory with red paint.

Demanueule said the company was the sole global producer for "upload actuators" which were a part of the F35 Striker Jets, believed to be used by Isreal.

"We want to call on the workers to down tolls on F35 parts," she said.

"We need engineering workers to work on components for health, housing and education.

"We don't want money spent on the war machines on killing innocent people."

Rosebank Engineering announced the activation of its F-35 Lightning II Wheels & Brakes Repair Depot at its Bayswater facility in October last year.

Early this morning, police confirmed eight people had been charged over the incident, after they agreed to come down from the roof.

A cherry picker was used to return the protesters to the ground. Nobody was injured.

A 62-year-old Carlton woman, a 36-year-old Carlton woman, a 28-year-old Brunswick West woman, a 27-year-old Thornbury woman, a 26-year-old Fitzroy man, a 27-year-old Eltham woman, a 32-year-old Hadfield woman, and a 52-year-old woman from Ocean Shores in New South Wales, were all arrested.

All have been charged with criminal damage, trespass, and being disguised with unlawful intent, and were bailed to face court on July 11.
