A man has been arrested after a hit-run collision in Melbourne's east overnight, which left another man fighting for life.

Police allege the 23-year-old victim was sitting in the middle of Boronia Road in Bayswater when he was hit by the car about 3.10am

The man was rushed to hospital with critical injuries.

The driver failed to stop at the scene and fled in the damaged vehicle, police said.

"Police received reports of a damaged vehicle with a man sleeping inside parked on Jacobus Walk in Ferntree Gully shortly after 8am," police said.

"The Bayswater man was arrested and is assisting investigators with their enquiries."

Detectives urge anyone who saw a blue XR6 sedan travelling in the area to come forward as the information may assist the investigation.
