Twin three-year-old girls die in rural NSW house fire

Twin three-year-old sisters have died after a fire ripped through their home at Batlow, on the New South Wales south-west slopes.

Aisha and Lailani became trapped in the house, with Fire and Rescue having to force their way into the locked home in Mayday Road just after 11am to pull the girls from the flames.

However, despite the best efforts of first responders, the twins died at the scene.

Their mother Tanyka Ford and their five-year-old sister watched on in horror as flames engulfed the home.

Resident Col Anderson said he was heartbroken that he couldn't do more.

"Three years old, it's the start of their life you know, when you think what could be in store for them," said Mr Anderson.

Superintendent Bob Noble, Commander of Riverina Police District said it was unimaginable what the family are going through.

"Obviously it's a particularly horrific incident, the lives of two young girls having been lost, the family and so forth, friends of the family are quite rightly distraught as are neighbours," said Superintendent Noble.

"The mother of the two deceased children is distraught, there was another young child present at that time, and you can only imagine what they're going through.

"It's just devastatingly sad that two young lives have been snuffed out like that," he later added.

Superintendent Noble also said there was a wood fire burning inside the house at the time and all the doors had been deadbolted shut.

Police from Riverina Detectives assisted by the Arson Unit of State Crime Command are working to establish the cause of the fire.
