Barnett again dismisses retirement rumours

West Australian Premier Colin Barnett has again dismissed retirement rumours, insisting he will continue as the Liberal leader until the public and his party decide otherwise.

The 63-year-old has always maintained he would not make a decision about his leadership until a year out from the next election.

"We're only one year into this term," he told ABC radio on Tuesday.

"I'll be guided by what my colleagues think and what the public thinks.

"I love the job, I've got no problem with that, but if they also think it's time for a change then so be it."

During last year's poll, the opposition suggested Mr Barnett would not even finish his term if he was returned to power, which the premier claimed was just an election tactic.

The opposition recently claimed the premier was in the "departure lounge" and would not remain in politics to address problems such as the state's falling GST share and reduced federal funding for health and education.

Mr Barnett labelled the comments "stupid", insisting no one worked as hard as him in government.

And if he had the support of his colleagues and the WA public, he would contest the 2017 election.

"I feel good, I'm excited about what's going on in Western Australia," he said.

Mr Barnett said he was not a selfish or greedy person.

"I will not overstay my time, but the new retirement age is 70, isn't it?" he joked.
