Malcolm Turnbull believes it is worth looking at US bankruptcy laws if means greater continuity of Australian businesses in times of strife.

The prime minister was responding to a question from another millionaire, Palmer United Party leader Clive Palmer, why the government doesn't introduce a Chapter 11 provision - like that in the US - which allows companies to merge to keep people employed and the economy flowing.

"I don't think anyone would recommend taking a facsimile of the American law and inserting it to Australia, but certainly considering greater measures to ensure greater business continuity, they are very good issues ... to consider," Mr Turnbull told parliament.
