A parliamentary committee has set aside three days to quiz Australia's biggest banks about their performance.

Economics committee chairman David Coleman said the public hearings in Canberra would scrutinise the banks on "how they balance the needs of customers, shareholders and the broader community".

October 4 has been set aside for CBA, while the ANZ will have its turn on October 5 and NAB and Westpac on October 6.
