Gold Coast man dies after bloody brawl over schooner of beer in northern NSW

A young Gold Coast man has died from his injuries after a bloody brawl over a schooner of beer outside a northern NSW pub last weekend.

Jesse Vilkelis Curas died of his injuries in a Queensland hospital at 2.30pm yesterday.

His devastated mother had flown into the Gold Coast to join other family members at his bedside following the bloody fight.

The family told 9NEWS they were bracing themselves for the worst.

The 24-year-old was drinking with his brother Nicholas at the East Ballina pub near Hill and Park Streets when a dispute broke out with another group of men over a spilled schooner of beer just before 8pm.

Mr Curas was allegedly set upon and knocked out outside the pub.

He was airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital with injuries that his treating doctors described as "catastrophic".

Detectives from Richmond Police District continue their investigations into the attack.
