Two Ballarat police officers charged over alleged station assault captured on CCTV

Two police officers have been charged after a drunk, off-duty colleague was allegedly stripped, kicked and stomped on in custody at the Ballarat police station.

Police said today a female leading senior constable was charged with one count of common law assault, while a male senior constable was charged with two counts of the same charge.

The charges relate to a January 2015 incident in which an off-duty female colleague was arrested for public drunkenness and then allegedly assaulted in police cells.

The matter was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions after Victoria's anti-corruption watchdog found it was just one example of alleged excessive force at the Ballarat station, outlined in a report tabled in state parliament in November.

The Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission inquiry was launched after IBAC received CCTV footage from Victoria Police allegedly showing the victim, 51, being kicked, dragged, stripped and stomped on in police cells.

Both officers charged have been transferred to non-operational duties and are expected to face the Ballarat Magistrates' Court on March 6.
