Lawyers for Bali Nine death row pair lodge desperate final appeal to delay executions

Lawyers for Bali Nine ringleaders Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan have formally lodged a desperate application to have their death sentences reviewed.

This is the final course of appeal for the pair, who face execution by firing squad in the coming weeks.

Lawyers are hopeful the judicial review will delay or prevent their deaths but Indonesian officials remain adamant the executions will go ahead.

Just having the appeal officially lodged was a small win for the prisoners but there is no guarantee the review will even be heard in court, with a spokesman for Indonesia’s attorney-general urging the court to reject the motion.

The spokesman added the legal move would not delay the executions.

Sukumaran and Chan’s supporters argue they have been rehabilitated in Kerobokan prison, with each taking on new causes to help their fellow inmates.

Under the guidance of renowned Australian artist Ben Quilty, Sukumaran now runs a painting school for other prisoners.

Chan meanwhile, runs bible study classes and preaches in his new role as a Christian pastor.

Chan and Sukumaran were arrested in 2005 in Bali over a plot to smuggle heroin into Australia and were sentenced to death the following year.
