Indonesia's ambassador has played down hopes of a new appeal for death row Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

Nadjib Riphat Kesoema said the pair's legal fight had reached "the highest level".

"Indonesia has notified the government of Australia that we will execute these two gentleman," he told reporters in Canberra on Sunday.

The lawyer who represented the two Australians when they were first sentenced to death alleges "interference" in the case resulted in them getting the death sentence instead of life in jail.

Muhammad Rifan has hinted at revelations that could aid a new appeal after meeting his former clients, who face execution before the end of February.

Chan, 31, and Sukumaran, 33, are set to face the firing squad within weeks for their roles in the 2005 Bali Nine heroin smuggling plot.
