Bail refused for accused Sydney rapist

A teenage girl was subjected to a prolonged and predatory sexual assault in Sydney's CBD, a court has heard.

Joseph Stephen Rosenburg appeared in Central Local Court on Monday charged with six sexual offences, including three counts of sexual assault without consent.

The 50-year-old Surry Hills man is accused of attacking the young woman in the early hours of August 30 last year in Hyde Park.

"The attack was of a prolonged and predatory nature," prosecutor Patrick Schmidt told the court.

Rosenburg was arrested after police matched DNA taken from the 18-year-old victim to him.

The prosecution opposed Rosenburg's application for bail and submitted he had a history of similar offences.

The prosecution said it was likely Rosenburg would offend again.

Rosenburg's lawyer said her client was a carer for his mother.

Magistrate Les Mabbutt refused bail given Rosenburg's record, the nature of the offences and strength of the prosecution case.

A tattooed Rosenburg waved to his mother in the public gallery before he was led away by court officers.

His mother shouted "thank you very much for framing people" as she left the court.

The case was adjourned to May 20.
