Deaf teen accused of helping push man to his death bailed

A profoundly deaf teenager accused of helping push a man to his death from a balcony has been granted bail.

Charged with murder and with her parents by her side, 19-year-old Georgia Fields walked free on bail from the Supreme Court today.

The deaf teenager, along with two other men, is accused of plotting to kill 36-year-old Robert Wright.

The trio allegedly pushed Mr Wright off a 12-metre balcony at a Ringwood apartment block on January 15.

Mr Wright suffered critical head injuries from the fall and died three days later in hospital.

All three of the accused as well as the victim are deaf, requiring sign language to communicate.

Ms Fields was allegedly spotted on CCTV on board a Melbourne train signing with the two co-accused and discussing how to commit the murder of one of their housemates.

The prosecution opposed bail and said it had a strong case against her, contending the teenager was the proponent of the plan.

But her defence claimed she backed out at the last minute, trying to prevent her friends from lifting the victim over the guard rail.

The court heard Ms Fields had become an isolated and lonely prisoner as the only deaf person at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre. She was described as complex, vulnerable, and immature and had been bullied by other prisoners and suffered from depression.

Ms Fields was granted bail on the condition she live at home with her parents, surrender her passport and report to police twice a week.

She is due back in court in August.
