Backyard sheds going through recreation revolution under pandemic conditions

The humble backyard shed has seen a refitting revolution during the COVID-19 pandemic, with some Australians opting to change the storage solution into a recreation getaway.

Dubbed the "She Shed" by some, a play on the term "Man Cave", the trend has lead to enormous growth for some shed retailers.

Daniel Rutland from Easy Shed told 9News the biggest spike in interest has been from Australia's cities.

"We have seen 450 per cent growth in the last 12 months alone. Shed sales are going through the roof," Mr Rutland said.

"Using sheds to expand the living space is not necessarily a new thing, but COVID has definitely accelerated this trend."

Gold Coast couple Sally and Tyler Wood have transformed their backyard shed into a disco dance heaven, trading in camping gear for pictures, memorabilia and memories.

"We pretend it's going out, without going out," Ms Wood told 9News.

"We can put the music on loud, we can dance, we can forget about what's going on in the world for a little bit.

"We love the vinyl, and once again, that's about taking us back to a time we used to enjoy."

Down the road, Amanda Shone has taken the "She Shed" to the next level.

She is even profiting from it, with a spare downstairs room being into a Pilates studio.

"We had this area and not really much to do with it, so we decided to start a business from home," Ms Shone told 9News.

"As soon as you drive out here, you start unwinding, and that's all part of the whole experience."
