Homicide detectives probe baby's 'suspicious' death

Homicide detectives are investigating the mystery death of an eight-month-old baby in Perth's southern suburbs.

A woman believed to be the baby's mother is assisting police with their inquiries. 

Neighbours said they heard screaming moments before police and paramedics arrived at the Baldivis home just after 10.15am today.

"I just feel quite heartbroken and yeah, I don't know what to say really. I'm in shock," neighbour Graham Stewart said.

The cause of death is unknown but detectives are treating it as suspicious.

"I'm feeling pretty like shook – like shaken, it's so sad. I can't believe it 'cos this is a pretty quiet street," neighbour Prescinda Pound said.

Officers shut down Winpara Way and set up a forensic van outside the home as they went door to door, trying to piece together what happened.

Neighbours told 9News a woman in her 20s, believed to be the baby's mother, was seen screaming out the front of the property this morning.

She was taken to Rockingham Hospital before being transferred to Fiona Stanley Hospital in a stable condition.

She is assisting police with their inquiries but so far no charges have been laid. 

"Detectives have been deployed to the scene, and inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the child's death are being undertaken. The death is being treated as suspicious," a WA Police spokesperson said.

Police said there was no ongoing threat to the community.

They urged anyone with information about the baby's death to contact authorities.
