Avocado prices to drop as bumper harvest arrives for summer
Avocado prices are expected to drop as a record Australian harvest gets into gear, just in time for summer.
The Herald Sun reports that more than 75,000 tonnes of the popular fruit are predicted to be produced in 2017-2018.
Prices are set to decrease from $3 to around $2.20 to $2.80 per avocado, with stores likely to do two for $4 or $5 deals, Antony Allen from Avolution marketing told the newspaper.
The flourishing production numbers come as Aussies consume more avocado than ever.
Sales of the fruit jumped by 20 percent over the past 12 months, a Woolworths sales person told the Weekly Times earlier this month.
The spike has no doubt be spurred on by the ubiquity of avocado on breakfast and brunch menus at cafes, with “smashed-avo on toast” a favourite of many.
