Understanding what causes autism and how the condition can be better managed will be the focus of five commonwealth-backed research projects.

The researchers from Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales will share in $4 million worth of funding, to investigate issues such as the brain changes that cause attention deficits for people with the condition.

Autism spectrum disorder involves abnormal brain maturation, cognition and behaviour and about one in 150 Australians are living with the condition in some form.
