More than two in five Australian voters back US President Donald Trump's decision to bomb Syria in response to the Assad regime's reported use of chemical weapons on its own people.

But the latest Essential Research poll found there was a greater number (39 per cent) that disapprove of sending US troops into the country than those who approve (37 per cent).

And half disapproved of the Australian government providing military support to US actions in Syria, including 43 per cent of coalition voters.

Almost a third (31 per cent) of respondents supported Australian involvement.

Terrorism was viewed as the greatest threat to global stability (49 per cent), well ahead of US aggression (15 per cent), climate change (11 per cent), Russian aggression (eight per cent) and Chinese aggression (five per cent).
