An Australian man has been found dead in India.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to man's family, but could not comment further due to privacy issues.

The Times of India named the man as 59-year-old Michael James O'Toole from Melbourne, adding that ambulance staff found his body by the side of the road in Udaipur on Sunday.

Police found some injury marks on his lower back but were waiting on autopsy results for a cause of death.

"Prima facie it may not be a murder or assault for loot as we found around Rs 9,000 in Indian currency inside his wallet," local policeman Chandra Purohit told The Times of India.

"There was a slip of a hotel in Chandpole area where he had stayed some weeks ago, however, we have no clue where the man stayed after that."
