A Chinese-born Australian artist detained ahead of the 25th anniversary of the military crackdown at Tiananmen Square has been deported from China.

Guo Jian returned to Sydney on Tuesday morning, after being arrested by Chinese authorities earlier this month.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said he had been deported "reportedly due to visa irregularities".

Mr Guo, who was a protester in 1989, was taken away by Chinese authorities shortly after a profile of him appeared in a newspaper in commemoration of the anniversary of the crackdown in which hundreds of people were killed.
