Storms to intensify over eastern Australia after week of wet weather

Severe storms are forecast in multiple states today with warnings in place for Queensland and New South Wales.

Troughs are generating showers and storms in Western Australia, northeastern South Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland and NSW, some severe, and showers in Victoria and southeastern SA.

Damaging winds and heavy rain are forecast for a large section of NSW including the North West Slopes and Plains, Central West Slopes and Plains, Riverina, Lower Western and Upper Western regions.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in areas including Tibooburra, Cobar, Bourke, Broken Hill, Ivanhoe and Menindee.

In Queensland similar conditions are forecast in Goondiwindi, St George, Hungerford, Bollon, Mungindi and Surat.

The rain follows a week of wet weather with Arden Downs northwest of Goondiwindi recording a whopping 48mm in just one hour at 3am today.

The most intense storm activity is likely to occur during the afternoon or early evening, near and shortly after the hottest part of the day.

Elsewhere, troughs are also maintaining heat in the northern, central and western interior.
