Australia is chipping in an extra $17.5 million in emergency food assistance to South Sudanese and Somalians suffering severe hunger and fleeing conflict and terrorists.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop earmarked $8 million for South Sudan, $4.5 million for Somalia and $5 million for the World Food Program to provide assistance in the Lake Chad basin region.

The cash comes from humanitarian funding within the existing Australian aid budget.
