Aussies urged to send gifts early as Australia Post sets Christmas delivery deadlines

Australians wishing to mail Christmas presents to their loved ones are being advised to do it early as Australia Post steels itself for the largest parcel volume in the organisation's 211-year history.

Due to the impacts of COVID-19 – including the restriction of some state borders and the boom in online shopping – Australia Post anticipates it will be deluged with time-sensitive parcels.

As a result, the service is urging Australians wishing to have their parcels delivered by December 25 anywhere in the country to have it sent by December 19 at the latest.

If using standard parcel post, to make it on time Australia Post recommends sending by Saturday, December 12.

If using Express Post, that date moves to Saturday, December 19.

If sending internationally, some countries require you to have your gift posted by November 9 in order to make it on time.

"With all the unprecedented changes we've faced this year, it's safe to say this Christmas will be unlike any we've had before. We're getting ready for the busy festive season ahead, and want to help you plan as well," the service has warned.

"We're working hard to deliver your letters and parcels, but delivery for Christmas will take longer this year as we manage the impacts of COVID-19 and more parcels than ever before.

"Sending as early as possible, and by the dates advised following, means your letters and parcels will have the best chance of arriving in time for Christmas.

"We'll still deliver items sent after these dates as quickly as possible, but it will be difficult to get them to their destinations by Christmas."

To manage demand Australia Post is re-training traditional posties to deliver parcels, and has chartered eight extra freighter flights to speed up delivery.

Up to 600 more staff will help with Christmas demand and 16 new sorting facilities have been established to minimise wait times.
