Albanese heads to China in bid to lift remaining trade restrictions

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is travelling to China in a bid to lift the remaining trade restrictions imposed by the country.

After years of diplomatic chill and trade retaliation, relations are on an upward trajectory after China reversed restrictions on barley and coal and is currently reviewing wine tariffs.

Albanese's visit comes half a century after Labor predecessor Gough Whitlam's historic trip to China, Nine's national affairs editor Andrew Probyn said.

He added Albanese will be the first prime minister in seven years to visit China, a sign of improving relations.

"While expectations of a major breakthrough on trade are low, the fact the visit is happening at all confirms the relationship is at least stabilising," Probyn said.
