Australia will provide close to $20 million in extra emergency assistance for five African countries where millions are at risk of starvation.

The money will provide emergency food, healthcare, water and sanitation to people in South Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Nigeria and Kenya.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says more than 10 million people are estimated to be on the verge of starvation due to ongoing conflict and widespread drought.
