Australians who use some models of Hewlett-Packard and Compaq computers are being urged to return a troublesome power lead that can overheat, causing fires and burns.

About six million "LS-15" cords, which were sold with HP and Compaq accessories, notebooks and mini-notebooks between 2010 and 2012, have been recalled in North America.

A local HP spokesman confirmed Australian consumers are also affected.

The company has received 29 reports of the LS-15 power cords overheating and melting or charring, resulting in two claims of minor burns and 13 claims of property damage.

The black cords have "LS-15" moulded on the adaptor.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using and unplug the cords and contact Hewlett-Packard to order a free replacement.
