All aboard for Sydney’s biggest ever Australia Day celebrations

This year's Australia Day is promising to have the biggest program of events Sydney has ever seen – including hosting the biggest ship in the navy as the centerpiece of celebrations.

Australia Day Council of NSW chairman Angelo Frangopoulos said the focus of 2015’s event would be the Harbour.

The new Salute to Australia will feature singers on the deck of the naval ship HMAS Canberra.

Other school choirs will be scattered across Sydney Harbour

Spectators will be encouraged to join them in the national anthem on the stroke of midday.

"Doesn't matter if you're a good singer (or) a bad singer, we just want you to sing loudly, sing passionately and sing for your country,” creative director John Foreman said.

There are also the usual highlights, including the Great Australian Swim Series from 8.30am.

The annual Ferrython will take over the water from 11am.

At 12.30pm the Harbour Parade flotilla kicks off, followed closely by the Australia Day regatta featuring up to 700 yachts.

The culmination of the day will be the Darling Harbour fireworks extravaganza at 7pm.

The army and air force will also take part with a 21-gun salute and an aerial fly-over.

HMAS Canberra is the largest ship they've ever owned.

On Australia Day it will be moved from Garden Island and positioned between the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.
